Hey, it happens man, three years ago took a buddy of mine that was just learning to fish offshore, it was on! open water yellowfin bite caugh5-6 of those, huge weed patch and I mean huge like maybe city block around, we caught dolphin and wahoo at will, and then caught a 250lb blue marlin to cap if off, he has not seen action like that in 10-12 trips offshore and wants to know why we haven't had another trip like that,

I try to tell him it just doesn't happen like that most of the time,

Loved the Pelagic Pirate report as those guys seem to kick butt routinely. It also keeps a lot of us trying.
Left for the Spur Saturday around 8am from Pensacola and started trolling near the Oriskany. No bites after close to 10 hours of trolling edge to 131 hole and onto the Spur. No birds, no bait schools or fish jumping, only a blowing apart weedline around the 131 hole that kept fouling our hooks. We set up to swordfish at the Spur with squid at 500, 250, and a Spanish on a hook at 100 without a bite the whole night. The current was ripping and moving us about 2 miles/hour. We reset after about 4 hours. We bottom fished the edge for a couple of hours and caught a large amberjack and one keeper Red Grouper, but were really too exhausted to fish much longer. Hoping for more success in the future. Keep the good reports coming.

Just a few tips that may help on your next try out:thumbsup:

1) Sea anchor is a must , it rights the boat one direction and slows you down so your baits are more staright up and down. We tie our off the side we fish right about midship. We bought our online from a lady in SC named Mertis Easterlynn, shes sells them cheap and they are huge and work !

2) If you are not using a drop in light buy a hydroglow or a rumble fish and drop it in the water to light up the water and attract bait.

3) Last, i think you may have fished your the baits too deep ( not saying that wont work) , But we always fish our baits at 75 , 100, 125 and 150 ft depth and spread them out using home made "bobbers" with lights sticks on top so you can see when one is gone or streaking on a bite. We put the farthest bait out 100 yards from the boat to a line straight down at the boat and in between.
