After doing some bush hogging yesterday afternoon I decided to set up on a couple of spots to see if I could call in a coyote. After no luck in a few spots I put out my decoy rabbit and placed my speaker about 75 feet from me and just sat down against a pine trees, not really expecting to see anything. Using the cottontail in distress I turned on the caller. As soon as I turned it on I heard huffing/puffing and something crashing through the woods behind me. About that time a great big doe busted out of the woods and started stomping my speaker. I could have thrown a rock and hit her, I was in full leaf camo but she was only interested in killing that speaker. I shut the sound off and she then went after my decoy, so I turned the speaker back on and she went back to it. I was shocked seeing this so close, she had that look in her face only a pissed off female could have, the lights were on but no one was home. You know what I’m talking about guys.
It was one of those times you wish you had your video camera. This went on for several minutes until she turned her attention to the big leafy thing sitting under. She started coming after me and I had to wave my arms to scare her. Even after that she hung out in the area and after I picked up my stuff I saw her cross the field about 50 yards away.
It’s been a while since I had one of those “WOW” moments in the woods. Only wish I had it on video.

What a show... I've never heard of that. Giving consideration to her actions, I wonder if she had a fawn close by that she was trying to protect from incoming predators. If that were the case though, wouldn't it require a good deal of reasoning skills on the deer's behalf. :whistling: I don't believe it's a conditioned response as I've never heard of another story like this... Thanks for sharing, I would have loved to seen something like that.

That's hilarious! Lol It's funny how deer act sometimes. One day I was bow hunting and had a spike come within 5 yards of me sitting on a ridge behind a bush. He hung around for an hour trying to fake me out bobbing his head up and down and stomping at me. So I said "Hi" and he perked his ears and went on bobbing his head. Lol he finally gave up and started feeding and eventually walked off and came back 2 hours later right at dark and started his routine all over again trying to see what I was coming so close I could smell him. Then I stood up and he fell over and spun out trying to get away lol

Im thinking she deffinitely knew that dying rabbit sound would bring in predators, and decided to hurry up and put it out of its misery. That and she probsably knew that if that happened, she is tastier than a small little rabbit. Smart deer. Great story. Animals are very unpredictable, and it would have been hilarious to watch the deer try to 'kill' the speaker, and then the decoy. Awesome! O*D*W

Ive seen that many times, and with Muledeer being more of a herd deer than whitetails, Ive seen more than a dozen come in to the call quite a few times. The rabbit distress is very similar to a fawn bleating and screaming, so just like it triggers a predatory response in coyotes, cats and fox...so it does with deer, in which it triggers a deffense response. They come in blowing and stomping, and will hang around for wuite a while, even after turning off call, waiting for 5 or ten minutes, they can be called back....very cool to see.
Ive had herds of antelope come charging to the call with same response, only to have them snap their heads looking off in the distance, whichh tells me a coyote is coming to the call. Had to wait once for the coyote to thread thru the herd of antelope and hit a gap where I could kill him. Lots of interesting stuff happens while calling predators, I never tire of it.

My first thought was maybe she recently lost a fawn to coyotes and that sound triggered something in her. Either way she meant to hurt something. Her mouth was open and she was aggressive.

It could be an old dry doe that has not fawned in years, and can still trigger a response. Animals are not cognitive thinkers, they are just genetically predisposed to respond to certain stimuli, just like the coyotes you were trying to call. The reason they come to a call, is everytime they have sank their teeth into a meal, it usually squealed bloddy murder, they don't know if it is a rabbit, mouse, fawn or piglet, it's a distress sound that means a full belly.

Ive seen that many times, and with Muledeer
Many years ago stationed in Montana a a buddy and I went out well after dark for our first coyote hunt. We set up in this little valley along the Missouri River. We called a few times, then I turned on the spotlight with it pointed straight up just to let the faint ring of light hit the ground. Holy Crap!! There were at least a dozen pairs of glowing eyes surrounding us. We thought we were about to get eaten alive. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would explode. I jerked the light down to ground level. We were surrounded by a herd of mulie does. :whistling:
