I personally am mostly a mature buck hunter, but sometimes I will kill a doe to fill the freezer. I don't have the patience to wait for a trophy deer.

i chose not to pick because i hunt different areas. at my camp in AL, im not shooting a buck unless its mature. no reason to kill little bucks on land you can try to manage. on public land, im gonna kill anything that has a small rack.. i most likely wont kill state legal, but thats just cause i think cowhorns and spikes are the dumbest deer on the planet and it doesnt make me proud to kill them..

Anything from Bambi to The Hartford. :letsdrink

Seriously, for meat, there's nothing like fat doe but I will let the smaller bucks walk. He has to have at least eight points and fairly wide unless it's a cull buck.

spannman (3/2/2010)A ?good? legal buck is a good kill and good eating.:moon
Nothing at all wrong with taking any legal buck but everybody who hunts deer would like to kill a big buck I think. What stopped me from shooting the first one that popped out was watching a huge buck run off after shooting a smaller one. If I had waited just another minute or two I'd have had one for the wall. I think some of those older, wiser bucks will use a smaller buck as a guinea pig letting him lead the way when there's pressure on them.

I enjoy eating venison. While old fine bucks look great on the wall, most are fit for just ground meat. I prefer killing 2yr old does...

Since I have only put one to rest so far, I can not talk about what I have done. I can only talk about my future philosophy on the subject. And since I am moving to SC, I will have a better opportunity to put my plan into action.

I hunt for the meat pure and simple. I will want to put a few doe in the freezer to have the meat early in the season. And then I can focus hunting for horns the rest of the season. Almost every hunter wants that trophy of a lifetime. And I am no exception. But my first and foremost goal is to get meat in the freezer. I just plain like to eat deer.

If it is getting to the later part of the season and I do not have any meat in the freezer, and my only "legal" option to do so is to shoot a small buck, then guess what is getting shot. Florida put's too many hunters in this situation I believe. But that's just my newbe to huntingopinion. Where as in other states, does are allowed to be taken more often. This allows for hunters to get their meat requirement and then let the little horns go.

Like Ryan said....I can't vote! Around the house I try to let small bucks walk but I have another piece of property ifin a legal 1 comes out I'll wax it's rear end! I love slaughtering nannies when legal and would prefer that since Florida is all wacked out w/ their buck to doe ratio!!!!:letsdrink

I can't answer the question with the answers given. My goal is to always kill a mature deer, whether it's a buck or doeI want it to be mature. The only time I might kill a younger deer is if I'm hunting Public land and the season is nearing an end and I have no deer meat in the freezer.

i can't answer the poll either. the questions are kinda loaded. first off, i'm a hunter. not just a deer hunter. i get just as excitied the night before rabbit season as i do deer season. with that been said i will follow the rules. i'm in 6 clubs. 2 of which are 6pt or better.i have no problem with that. but if any legal deer steps out carrying 2 backstraps it's in trouble. same thing on state land. i don't get into the horn porn deal. if its got them fine, if not i'm cool with that to. i would rather eat them than stare at them on the wall...............tony

I try to shoot mature unless I haven't killed a buck but then I still like to keep it at 8 point or better and 2.5 years old. I'll shoot a spike, 4 pnt, 6 pnt whatever if it is a mature 4.5 year old deer and needs to be taken out imo. I always shoot up. If I shoot an 8 point then it at least has to be a much larger 8 point before I shoot...shooting up doesn't always mean just point count. If I shoot a big mature 8 then I have chance at a young 9 or 10 then they get a pass.:letsdrink
