I've used those cheaper hand helds right next to a $1000 color chartplotter. Works great... maybe doesn't update as often, but it'll get you there for sure.

I've got a garmin gps 72 to let go cheap, works fine, shows some of the channel marks and that sort, is black and white

its pretty quick, but certainly no frills

look at the garmin 76cx map. should be around $300. great unit for the price.
