Looking to purchase a hand held VHF radio. Not looking to break the bank but don't want to end up with a piece of junk either. Anyone have a recommendation?

Just get one that is waterproof and has at least 5 watts of power. There too many to choose from. I have an old Icon that I have had for years with no problem.

No handheld is going to have more than 5 watts, and virtually all of them will have that. Some of the submersible models do not float. To me that is counterintuitive so think about floating options or a way to store it where it will not sink with your reels. I have a yaesu (standard horizon affiliate) handheld for amateur radio that is great. On the other hand, my standard horizon mounted on the boat is not as nice as the icom also mounted on the boat. I think you can't go wrong with those brands in terms of quality, just make sure they float or you have a plan to keep it near and tethered on the boat.

As said....All handhelds claim 5watts output and can not go over that.

Standard Horizon & Icom are the leaders.

Just do the side by side comparisons.
