Hello, I hunt in crenshaw county Alabama and I was wondering if grunt calls/rattling will work here. I've heard that it will scare more deer off than bring them in is this true? Is it worth trying? Thanks.

If your buck to doe ratio is 2 or three to 1 - I think grunting works if you do it very little and only after Christmas
A doe or fawn bleat will work sometimes on a doe or fawn, but very seldom a shooter buck
Rattling like you see on TV will scare a deer around here to death - usually.... however I have found that occasionally "tinkling" horns together in the early season will bring in a pretty nice buck.
**NOTICE - that I used the words "sometimes", "occasionally", "usually", and "I think" in the above statements.
** and things may occasionally be different in Crenshaw county sometimes. LOL!

Country boy - Did you hunt last year in Walnut Hill with an older brother?
I hunted with my dad on our hunting lease in Crenshaw county al. It was my first year of deer hunting, I shot at a small buck but missed. I didn't have much knowledge going into deer hunting and it was the first time my dad has been hunting sense he got married. So I was trying to get some more knowledge before the upcoming season.

Country boy in places where they only hunt for a short season deer don't have the hunting pressure that the deer inour area have. They are educated. That being said grunts and rattling does work sometimes but most likely they have heard it before and seen the hunter thus educated. Grunting during the rut has been successful for me but I rarely do it except when everything is just right.

Ok thought you might have been someone else. Hardest thing about calling is fighting the urge to do it to much. My first year grunting I ended up sounding like a room full of guys who had beans for supper. I did it way too much.... Even now I have to shove it way down in my pocket so that its hard to get to!!
