Alright guys,

Finally managed my first pompano of the year, but ended up with some frustration as well. Until this point, I have been pretty much getting skunked time and time again. The bad skunk, where your baits aren't even touched, no bites, nothing.

Went out to Henderson Beach today, and got my first pompano (14 inches to the fork, 2 lbs 4 oz). What I also got was 4 significant bites with no hook ups, and 2 hookups losing the fish on the way in.

My question for you guys is, am I just unlucky, or doing something wrong?

I'm using 1/0 owner circle hooks on a self made double drop rig made of 14 lb flourocarbon, a yellow or orange float, and a 2-4 oz weight.

Bait was shrimp and sand flea fish bites. About a 1" piece on each hook, hooked once in the middle.

Presentation is working, like I said, several bites just not landing the fish.

All i can think of is maybe the hooks are too small, or I'm not handling the reel / rod the right way on the way in.

Any tips on the setup or on how you land your fish would be appreciated.

Thanks

Braid or monofilament on your reels? Stiff rods or limber rods?

I've found I pull lots of fish off on the stiff rods with braid, I now fish those rods with extremely loose drags.

Of the 9 pompano I caught today I still managed to pull 3 off. It happens.

Try loosening your drag. I fish with mine very loose. You can always crank it down if need be.

Even with the right equipment losing fish does happen. Good luck.

15 lb braid on the reel (mono backer I never get to, reels are oversized). I'll check the rods, as I'm not sure on the stiff vs limber. One is a 10 foot combo with a penn battle 2, the other is a 20 year old okuma 12 foot rod from korea. I also use really lose drag, to avoid any mishaps with my sandspikes falling.

Try a 3/0 or 4/0 eagle claw circle hook and 1 inch pieces of peeled fresh table shrimp and/or 2 inch pieces of hot pink shrimp fish bites.
