have a 93 40 hp Merc- the starter bedix did not spin up to the top yesterday for the first time ever. It stayed at the bottom and spun like crazy, but would not advance up to engage with the flywheel. I got the boat home, took cover off and tapped lightly on the starter and it spun right on up. Should I go ahead and pull the starter off and carry it to someone to go over it, or is this normal? Never had this happen before and don't want to be way up river and the thing take a dump on me!

Thanks for any input!

I had a similar thing happen to me recently.

Turned out my connections on battery were not good.

They weren't corroded just oxidized and/or loose enough to prevent proper voltage/current from reaching starter. I would clean and tighten all terminals before I troubleshoot too far. I would have saved myself sometime had I done that.

Lube and go.
