Anyone ever hunt in SC. Thought I would see if anyone had any advise for hunting in the Lowcountryarea of Charleston. There is a very large national forest/WMA called the Francis Marrion National Forest near the area that I can hunt. I will also be looking for a club to get into once I get moved up there. It seems that their rut season is very early compared to here.

But I was wondering what anyone had to say about the area. Is it very similar to our area here? Two counties in the northern part of the state have a short bear season. I will definately be looking more into that once I get up there. It would be great to hunt bear.

Any advice????

its comparble to hunting in the MS delta. they have a lot of rice and bean farming. low flat land with timber brakes. 500 yard shots are not uncommon there. great duck and deer hunting. my fiance's family is from pawleys island sc. we go there and hunt for a week each year. good folks from that area.

oh yea. its kinda like going back in time. nobody owns 40 acres up there. its either a house in town, or a 5000 acre plantation thats been in the family since 1841....

hunting in s.c. is pretty good but i personaly don't hunt much. the fish are biteing to good during hunting season to go hunting! the francis marion national forest is mostly pine woods and the undergrowth is THICK. there are no operational rice farms in south carolina anymore but the land that was once used for rice cultivation is still in private hands and most of it it used for duck hunting. the state has game management areas thruout the state and they allow deer hunting on most of it. yoi should have a problem finding somewhere to hunt. sc has the longest deer season in the country btw. bow hunting opeans in places aug. 15th and the gun season doesn't close till jan 1st. most of the deer in the lowcountry are a little on the small size but in the piedmont they get pretty large. 300 lbs is not unheard of.

I was stationed up there in the mid through late 90's @ Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort. The hunting was excellent, very long season and they have excellent anterless opputunity so meat in the freezer is allways an option. I hunted a lot on the air station in beaufort, but also spent quit a bit of time on public land, which there is no shortage of. Like mentioned above season kicks off very early there(aug) so you can actually kill a velvet buck up there if you put the time in early. I will get back to you on names of wma's in the area, been awhile. I do remember one between beaufort and hilton head, great place called Victoria Bluff, archery only about 900-1000 acres. Great place because no one hunted it, i never saw anyone else out there. I never hunted Francis Marion, it was a drive for me and there was so much oppurtunity south of it. Another place i had good luck at was the SC side of the Savannah River NWR, GREAT place if you like to hog hunt. Ther are so many more places i use to hunt there, just cant remember the names, I'll get back to you on them. Great state to hunt though, I loved my time there for that reason.

Donolly and Tillman Sand Ridge were the other two i hunted, google SCDNR and look for game zone 6 under hunting, that is the entire lowcountry. enjoy your time there, it offers great hunting and plenty of deer. We also use to take the opening week and camp up in the western piedmont wma, beautiful woods and bigger deer. They offer primative camp sites, dont be too alarmed if you hear banjo's, great people up there when we were there each year, but kinda deliverence like, they will help you out and get you in the right areas. Hope i atleast gave you some insite, Im missing that area as we speak.

Thanks for the info. I have already heard the banjo music in a few areas up there. Scares my wife a little in some areas. It's something new and different. So that's always a little worrisome sometimes. But I am just anxsious to get up there and get settled in and start hunting, fishing, and diving. I have heard some good things about the surrounding areas up there. So we shall see.

Megladon teeth are abundent up there in the river mouths along the coast, pretty crappy viz, a little better than brail diving, but its worth it to find big teeth. Never got a chance to shoot fish up there, but it is suppose to be good, good luck and happy hunting.

They are supposed to have a good amount of hog fish and an abundant supply of good gags offshore. That is if they don't close them down before I get up there.:banghead But I will be spearfishing a lot less probably. You have to run a minimumof about 26-30 miles to get good viz out of Charleston. And myboat is a little too small to be running that far out in the Atlantic. That's why I am taking up hunting. Got to fill in that time I can't spearfish somehow.
