I have an old 12" brass ships bell known to be at least 125 yrs old. The inside is plated with another metal, dark reddish brown, doesnt clean up, a touch of acid doesnt chainge it. Any ideas as to what it is?

No clue, butDO NOT clean or try to restore it. I would love to see some pics.

could be copper beryllium. They used to make hammers out of this until it was realized how poisonous it was.

Definitely don't clean. Leave it in it's original condition. Cleaning only decreases the value 99% of the time.

Are there any markings on it as to who made it? Years ago there were alot of diff metals being used.

I agree DONT clean it, it could be the diffrence in big money and scrap.
