Opinions out there on how long seeds remain potent for food plots? A friend from work gave me 10 lbs of various seeds (winter barley, buckwheat, clover, etc.) that is a few years old. Are these even worth planting?
The best way to find out is to plant some at your house, make a small bed 2'X2'. and sow the seeds, cover and water. If they are good they will come up in a few days...
You have to worry about temperature too. Last year I left a bag of oats over the summer in the hunting camphouse. They stayed dry, but I am sure they got near 100 degrees at some point. Not a one of them sprouted. I had to over seed that section of the food plot a month later.
weed seeds don't get storage and they come up year after year. You will lose some germination % but they should come up. 10# is not very much seed for barley and buckwheat...will only plant a very small plot.
