Guys,

I'm a complete rookie to boats. Just bought a boat with no motor.

Question #1: Is there a place locally that sells used Mercury outboards?

Question #2: Can the shaft size on an outboard be changed and if so what is the typical cost?

Thanks for your help,

Joel

You will need to call around to see if anyone has any used outboards. As far as the length, there are kits made to lengthen the unit by 5", but to shorten it, you will have to change the midsection out (expensive). The extension kits are $400-$600.

If you are a real rookie, I would suggest you get someone like Davlor Marine to help you locate a motor, get the right one, and check it closely before installation.

Used motors bring their own problems that need to be checked out before you jump in and put money into buying it.

Even seasoned boat owners can get burned dealing with used motors....
