So, Strikelines alleges that he isn't stealing spots, but when someone takes them from him it's theft??

I know they were picking a jury last week or this week. Not sure if it's against the same guy.

Between April and November 2018, Smith allegedly obtained information valued at more than $5,000 from a protected computer without authorization, stole sonar coordinates of reefs in the Gulf of Mexico, and transmitted a threat to injure the property and reputation of StrikeLines.
Crimes.

uses commercial side scan sonar equipment to locate fishing reefs in the Gulf of Mexico and sells coordinates using an interactive map on their website.
Not crimes.

I can understand why people are not happy with what Strikelines does, but it's interesting how people will point out that anything that is dumped over the side of a boat into the Gulf, or anything on the sea floor, cannot be considered personal property; but then people will assert or insinuate that doing sonar work and then selling the information collected is stealing. Personally, if I paid money to properly deploy a reef and the someone came along, found it, and started selling its location, I would be seriously irritated... I get that. But I would not be able to claim they had stolen anything from me.

With the increasing availability of sonar to find bottom relief, and radar to ping those whom are fishing it, the only answer I see to the issue of those hoping to protect their favorite fishing spots is to work to make more fishable habitat available than there are anglers to fish it.

I have been around this reef crap since the late 50s. Been warned when running close to a private reef by firing a handgun in the air at me.
I don't like what striklines has done but he has put a lot of time and money into it. And I don't think it's illeagal.
I believe the only thing he will be found guilty of is the computer theft.
The way Robert Turpin is building reefs. In a couple years if they would just close flounder nov-feb for at least 3 years And include Grouper with snapper closed season. There will be more public spots loaded with fish than boats. The snapper are making an amazing recovery.
