I posted this earlier and it disappeared, so I'm posting again.

On the way in to one of my deer stands today to check cameras, I saw a black squirrel. I tried to find out from the FWC Website whether it is legal to hunt them or not. Can anybody tell me if you can shoot these black squirrels, and show me where it says so?

Thanks,

Ed

I only got a shot of it running the other way, so I couldn't see its hear or face. It looked pretty big, I guess I better play it safe and assume it's protected, even though I can't find anything that says it is.

Thanks for the info.

I've seen them in Lousianna, they were the size of grey squirrels but were pitch black. I think it's a pigment variation like being albino. I wouldn't think there would be any other restrictions on them. Let's see the pics.

Black squirrel

@ P'COLA I would think they are protected here in Florida.. I'm from Arkansas... we dont have that issue. We have allot of Black Squirrels up that way.. and Fox squirrels almost the size of a nice tender cotton tail! I would not take the chance of shooting one, there's nothing in the book that says Black Squirrels are off limit that I can see.. but they might tie it back into the Red Fox Squirrel!

"Running away" = fox squirrel...hauling butt up a tree = grey squirrel! Unless you guys got some mutants I haven't seen yet...:whistling:

I have about a thousand pics of squirrels on the ground under my feeder. They all ran on the ground to get up a tree, I promise.

Rog-o, DLo. But if you've ever seen a fox squirrel run through the woods you get my point. They run on the ground till they disappear into thin air..greys usually run to the nearest tree then go vertical, usually giving you a better look before they head to that magical spot they all have to vanish into. Then again, I haven't seen all the squirrels around here yet so they might have some tricks I haven't seen!

I'm not saying its not a fox squirrel, I'm just saying it might not be. I would put a camera on a pile of corn and see for sure. If its a black pigmented grey squirrel I would hunt it and have it mounted.
