Shiznik (2/14/2010)Curious to see the pic of the one you make. The steel/alloy Walmart ones may work, but the do rust around all the fitting, bolts after a while. How about a long handle too for taller people? Might create more leverage and work better? Just an idea?

Chris

I havent made one yet. But I have the materials. I don't make things that rust. Ever. And I don't care if the handle is 2 ft long or 10ft long. If I were to make you one, it would be to your spec
Shiznik (2/15/2010)Might sound crazy, but if I one with my own specs to it, it'd be 6' long and 20" wide for the rake catch. I was kinda wondering what yours would look like for the mesh. Sounds like it'd be awesome for the fleas! You might have another product line there!

Thats fine. I have sand spikes for sale too, but if you wanted one with a 12 ft handle Id make it. lol. For the mesh I would probably use expanded aluminum, which has a diamond patter of holes.
I finished mine today... I wont be making anymore guys... sorry I just have too many projects going on that I need to concentrate. The one I made is nice, but there is no way I can make one like mine for a price you guys would buy and still be worth my time and effort. If I had more tools and some different materials, possibly, but for now sand flea rakes are off my "to do list".

That does not mean I wont make them in the future when I have different materials and tools. I would also revisit the sand flea rake situation if I come up with a simpler design that I can make economically

If you don't mind post a pic of the one you made with specs, I'd love to compare it to the one I have just out of curiosity!

Ok... not my best work but like I said , its a prototype. Main problem is use of that mesh metal called "expanded metal". They make some edging to go around it, because when you cut it, you end up with a jagged edge that needs to be covered up. Also, because its just a bunch of jagged little legs, its really not good to weld to. The premade edging is expensive but if you have the right equipment you can bend and fold your own. I dont have that equipment, so I ripped 1 inch strips from sheet metal, then welded them all the way around. PITA ( pain in the ass ). then when I welded it up, you get a nice rounded edge, but really it needs to be sharp. I would make the handle out of thicker material if I did it again, but this one works ok, could make it stiffer just by welding a piece of angle to it. The pistol grip works great, and the handle is nice and long so you can stand out of the water, use, it, not get wet, and not have to bend over at all. And it can be used with one hand. Anyway, here it is, could use some refining but Im not going to make another one and I am not going to sell this one. It's a "rough draft" and not an example of my best work.
