I skipped eighth grade math but i had to reapeat algebra.haha
my answer is 7

2 3/8 - (-1 1/6 )
2 3/8 = 2 9/24
- (-1 5/6) = 1 20/24

3 29/24 = 4 29/24
2 3/8 - (-1 1/6 )
2 3/8 = 2 9/24

Step-by-step:
2 3/8 - (-1 1/6)
2 3/8 + 1 1/6: minus a negative converts to a plus (positive)
19/8 + 7/6: convert whole numbers to fractions and incorporate into the fractions themselves
57/24 + 28/24: convert fractions in Greatest Common Denomination (GCD)
85/24: add the fractions since they have the same denominator now
3 13/24: reduce to whole numbers with the fraction again, reduce the fraction to smallest denominator but can't be in this case because 13 is a prime number and can't be reduced.

3 29/24 = 4 29/24 would be 4 5/24 if it was right.

Remember these books are written by humans, humans make mistakes, so you will find at least a couple of errors in any math book. Used to piss me off when I was trying to learn some tough theory in my college Calculus book and it had an error that slipped through the proof readers.
The book is wrong, it changes the value of -1 1/6 to -1 5/6 midway through the explanation, if -1 1/6 was originally -1 5/6 in the first line then the explained answer would be correct.
