Headed to marathon at the end of January for a week, any fishing tips would be greatly appreciated. Got a 23' CC rented for a week. Staying close to Vaca Key.

Lots of chum and start working the patch reefs as you make your way out to the main reef line.

Captain Pip’s is probably the biggest boat rental place in the Keys. Their main office is located in Marathon.

Along the seven mile bridge is your friend for tarpon if you're in to that. Big live pins and mullet work great.

Florida tarpon-fishing seasons vary from one area of the state to another, by habitat and size of fish, and time of day (day vs night). The bottom line is that you can find/catch tarpon somewhere in Florida every month of the year.

This time of year, watch for bait balled up or frigates diving, sailfish. Cero mackerel will come to chum lines, along with blackfin. Triggers can be a nuisance on those chum lines.Tarpon are common inshore. Chum high on live bottom and watch for yellowtail snapper coming up. Lot of red grouper on that same bottom.

Bahia Honda Bridge was always my go to place in the Spring for Tarpon.
Finger Mullet are the best bait by far if you can find them.
Small crabs work well.
Small Owner Hook on a Flouro Leader.
They have incredible eyesight

Are the lobster active that time of year or have they gone to deeper water?

Hire a guide for your first trip, well worth it. I've fished there around the 7 mile bridge and sombrero reef. If you watch some of
the you tube videos of the locals fishing that would help, too.

If your talking about taking lobster there is a strict season only.

According to myfwc.com lobster season is open till March 31 except in protected areas. Am I misinterpreting it?

Lobster is open. Get some dry oats and mix with menhaden oil to also chum with.
