I think I know what LY's are, but I'm not 100%. Can someone post a picture? What are their other common names?

common names? hubbards charters in madeira beach calls them blackspot snapper.

During certain conditions they are a little more green on the top / backs. THE best bait there is by far.

Then there is the "but technically" crowd that says they are Gulf Menhaden. We just call em LY's.

Technically a scaled sardine (Harengula jaguana), which is commonly referred to as a pilchard, greenie, whitebait, alewife or whatever else someone may choose to make up. Bottom line they're great bait.

done that more times than I'd like.
now I just use the net to chum 😅 after a few hours of being hot they get very soft. Throw the net over the side of the boat every so often give it a good snatch and several pop loose everytime 🤣
