They are plentiful if you find them. I caught hundreds in my net friday afternoon, put three handfulls in my 5 gallon bucket w/ areator and they were dead in three minutes! I put to many in there, but still thats quick. Do yall really like them for bait, I have never had much luck and prefer other baits????

in my opinion they are the best bait for anything ive caught grouper,AJ, dolphin, tripletail, gator trout, reds, ladyfish, bluefish, spanish, and king to name most of the species ive caught with LY's, their good dead, alive, and frozen.

Some call them bunker right?

I read in Saltwater Sportsman this month that if you leave them down in the water in the net for a minute before you dump them in your livewell or whatever, it will give them a chance to live longer. This is b/c they regurgitate their food when they get stressed, so you give them a chance to do that before getting in the livewell.

Dead ones on a steel dropper rig in the surf is great for small (3ft and smaller) sharks.

Wharf Rat, they are not the same as bunker (aka menhaden or pogies).

DevilDog, they are actually namedScaled Sardines.

LYs is probably a misnomer for Alewives a relatedspecieswhich looks very similar but aren't native to the Gulf of Mexico.

Here's a few links to the same question on the old forum:

With the experience that I have had with them, they need good water movement and replacement more than air in order to stay alive longer.
