Lower Choctawhatchee River Bream

Buddy and I puttered downstream yesterday morning about 7 am from Black Creek Lodge. This is near Freeport, FL. The sun rose about 6am, but we are both retired and do more putter fishing rather than run and gun. The river is not much for run and gun speedsters anyway, but we see those 60 mph bass boats playing the part now and then if out there on a weekend . We hit places like Rushing Cutoff, Dunwoody, Liveoak Cutoff. and Williams Lake and picked up a few bream and shellcrackers here and there. No bragging size but enough decent eaters. Ended the day with a 38 count. Those devil striped crickets outdid worms for bait.

Incidentaly, speaking of bass boats, the new owners of Black Creek Lodge have decided this will be the last year for bass tournaments out of their facility. They are doing a major renovation that is bringing in motor campers and a parking problem has become a big issue.. Last Saturday there was hardly a place to park due to campers and bass tournaments all in the same small area.

I got my mullet smoker going right now and the aroma is floating inside the house. Hmmmmm.....I'm ready.

Dang, J B, that's some stud hump-nosed bluegill in that line-up! Saturday, I took my nephew and his 13 y/o boy to Yates Lake and got 28. Mostly shellcrackers, and we had to work for them. Never found more than a handful at any stop. I cleaned fish most of Sunday afternoon, then took my doctor friend yesterday and just finished cleaning 22. Mostly shellcrackers, but a few hump-nosed 'gills and three or four redbreasts. We used pink worms and red worms. Should have cut my fingernails before we went, because I've got worm goo flavoring all my finger food.
Nice job Mr JB. It wouldn’t bother me if they made every type of fishing tournament illegal. Especially the bass fishing junk.

Nice JB. See skinning plyers out....any cats in that mess?
Nice catch! Is a hump nose a bull bluegill by another name?

Large male bluegills develop a pronounced "hump" on their forehead, so I guess I should call them "hump-foreheaded" bluegills.

I suppose that could be depending on your local lore. Usually the bigger the bluegill the bigger the hump.
