It was 11:30 yesterday and I was on my way home from a meeting at a law firm in Birmingham when I got the bright idea to call my friend Mike and see about the possibility of heading offshore to catch the midnight bite, put some snapper in the boat and be home by 2:00am.

As usual he was willing despite the fact he had to work the next day, so after some prep and rest from my business trip, we headed out in the dark to a spot I found last year that I call Lane City. Lane City gets its name from the fact that every time we fish it we catch these very respectable Lanes as well as huge RS's, mingos and black snapper.

The spot is so unremarkable on the bottom machine that if there is any chop at all it wont even register in your mind that there was anything down there that is worth dropping on. That's why its good. Yesterday evening was one of those days, nothing showed on the bottom machine so I just threw the jug on the number and anchored.

The current last night was so swift it was like literally fishing in a river. It took 16 ounces of weight to get a bat to the bottom but when you got there is was worth it. Within the first 30 minutes of fishing I got my limit of RS's and this King Kong black snapper. It was a great trip until...

About 1:30 am the moderately choppy seas became very rough with a hard wind out of the NE. I knew it was coming from what I read, before I left on the NWS site which called for NE shift at 10 to 15 after midnight. Actually it was 20 knts sustained and kicked our butts all the way home for the better part of two hours. I didn't get to bed until 5:15 much to the dismay of my wife who gave me the "Are you serious?" look when I walked into the bedroom.

Well another lesson learned I guess, a lesson I have to re-learn every year, but it was still worth it even if my wife does think I'm a little obsessive about night fishing. I probably am.

Good catch! Just out of curiosity how deep is this spot? Closer to Panama City or Pensacola?

I'm trying to dial in the Mangrove bite in Alabama and am always curious to hear from other people.

That's a fine "black snapper". Has anyone ever figured if those are actually cubera? ChrisV?
