This past weekend over 70 kayak anglers traveled from near and far to compete in the second King of the Island Offshore Kayak Fishing Tournament. Friday evening anglers were greeted with brand new tournament shirts and awesome captains bags courtesy of Unfair Lures! The following morning, 71 anglers launched from Santa Rosa Island with hopes of screaming drags and accurate gaff-shots.

At 6:00am on Saturday September 30 a brisk NE wind made for perfect launch conditions. The steady wind made for even more perfect fishing weather as was later determined at the weigh-in!

Anglers had until 4:00pm to reach the scales with their heaviest bag of mackerel, pelagics, and reef fish.

The goal for most anglers was to catch 5 fish to be submitted for the offshore slam category. Seems easy right? Not so fast! Only 2 fish of any species could be weighed so in order to weigh 5 fish you had to land 3 different species. Target species for the offshore slam division were King/Spanish mackeral, mahi-mahi, cobia, blackfin tuna, and wahoo.

Eligible species for the reef division were grouper, mangrove/lane/vermillion snapper.

Shortly after 2:00pm the scales opened and anglers immediately began weighing their catches. Anglers poured through the line carrying fish bags loaded to the max! By the time the scales closed at 4:00pm 40 anglers had submitted over 150 fish!

From big blackfin tuna, solid mahi, and some hefty kings, the weigh-in was filled with excitement!

Once the scales closed we began crunching the numbers and it was determined that Derrick Todd of Gulf Breeze had won by a longshot!

Derrick Weighed in a 23.8lb blackfin tuna, two kingfish, and two spanish mackerel for a whopping 49.8lb total!

Brad Schwartz was the next closest with 4 fish weighing 28.6lbs

When it was all over with everyone had a great time and some outstanding anglers won some awesome prizes. Derrick was rewarded for his outstanding day with $1,000 cash and a Lowrance Hook7!

Thank you to everyone who supported and competed in KOTI. Keep an eye out for the next one because it will be even bigger and better!
