I am looking to but a bow to hunt with next season and I am worried about buying aused one for the reason of it possibly being dry fired and might be wasting my money. Is it better to just spend the money on a new one or will I be able to tell if the used one is in good condition still?

are there any visable cracks or splits in the limbs??? if the limbs are coming apart or cracks in them i wouldnt worry about it...you could always take it to a bow shop and have them take a look at it....i had a bow that i hunted with for 4 years that had been dry fired a few times on accident and it still shot just like the day i bought it when i sold it

I would not be worried at all about buying a used bow. I have bought 2 without a problem , and hopefully will be buying another one of these days. As has already been said, check for any visible problems, and you should be fine. Obviously know about the value and performance of the model before you buy it, there are a lot of old obsolete bows for sale. On the other hand, there are a lot of guys who have to have the latest bow, and sell bows that are just a couple of years old. If you watch, you sometimes can buy one that was cutting edge technology a few years ago for less than you can buy half as good a bow new.

Limbs

Cam/wheel axels

Splits near axels outward

Stripped out limb adjustment heads and bolts

Change the string and cables after you buy. (proper maintenence)

repainted stuff needs inspectection especially if its a real good deal!

Test fire that sucker, stick a arrow in it and let them shoot it! If they are weary of it then you should also be.

If your looking for a left handed PSE I have one that has never seen the woods! Draw Loc, fiber optic sight, and some other stuff..... $200.00 will deal ... It was my buddy who got old too fast after he bought it. Left handed.

Some of the top bow manufacturers test their equipment by dry firing their bows ( at 70 pounds) up to 15,000 times without a failure during their research and engineering testing before hitting the market.

Bows today are tough, but factory bow strings are not so tough.

Thank you all for the feedback. I think I will try my luck with a used one then. I just wasn't sure if there was anything I should be worried about. One last question. Is there a brand that I should try to get ? I am 6'5'' tall about 225 lbs. I would need a 30'' draw. Are Matthews and PSE good brands? as these are the ones I have seen most for sale. Thanks again for the feedback
