Went out all of last week and could not find the spanish AT ALL! We fished the Big Lagoon grass flats, the red buoy at the top of Big Lagoon, and a bunch of other places but to no avail! Where can I catch them? On what (I have plenty of Gotchas and live bait)?

Thanks,

Sedge

Try trolling the bouys around pcola pass or troll out to the mass and freeline baits or throw gotchas. Keep your eyes peeled for diving birds or jumping spanish.

I don't know where to find the spanish but I never go wrong with a spoon. Either trolling or casting. I usually catch spanish around drop offs.

I would hit the beach either in the draw or out off the 2nd sand bar 50 yards or so in and out, size is the issue for me they are legal just small. baits vary on what they want I usually run a bubble rig with a straw trailing on 80lb mono produces allot of bites and also troll gotcha's, spoons, rattletraps, little rapalas work well sometimes too. as far as the bigger ones they will usually prefer live baits with the abundance out there, a couple of weeks back I was behind the base at the pipeline and caught 3 that were all over 5lbs, biggest one being around 7lbs couldnt believe it, I caught them on large menhaden thought thought they were small kings, once I realized they were spainish I got real happy and nervous of loosing with no gaff on board. Smaller menhadden are my bait of choice but lately all I can get are the big ones. always spot them ouside the pass bustin baits as well but the sometime become pretty locked in on what they feeding on so do your best to match there prey, I have some smaller gotcha type lures in varying colors for them finicky ones. good luck...

you want to work them gotchas very rapidly wile twitching usually in a boat soon as it hits on pier I would let it sink some just to avoid over doing it and hooking someone with a flying treble, have had them go flying by on the boat as well with some enthusiastic anglers as well as poor mans tarpon jumping and throwing it back at ya. Dont hurt to pinch the barbs on the gothchas they are allot easier to pull out.
