Hi all, again,
Sure hope you can help. We will be relocating this Dec. into your area. Just not sure where would be best. I have a 19 foot boat for inside, and am having a 31 Yellowfin being built. I am drawn more toward Pt St Joe, just not sure for the better pelagic fishing offshore if we are better off toward Panama City, Pensacola, etc. I asked before, and some of you were really helpful. We looked around toward Crystal River, just not doable for our interests. Any help, or suggestions would be really great.
Also, we will rent first, then buy, and if I cannot keep two boats in a safe neighborhood, I would like recommendations for a good marina. Probably would go drystack if storage on trailer and ramp is not available.
Ok, thanks again,
Fred

Realtor, we have never checked out Pensacola. However, people we know who live there who really like it. That is why we will rent first. We have driven through there many times back and forth from Mt to Crystal River. The Yellowfin won't be ready until Jan or Feb anyway, and I know it is slow this time of year inside, at least for the tripletail and cobia, etc. Thanks for your reply...Fred

Area

depends on what you want.....Pensacola has more of the city feel to it and has closer proximity to offshore fishing including oil rigs. Inshore fishing is ok.
pensacola has a fair amount of crime but the cost of living isnt too bad and it has the best hospitals in the area.

Destin area offshore fishing is about the same you are just a little farther away long ride to the rigs about 100 NM but not to bad if you are having the 36 built. 110 fathoms about 30 NM
all areas in between them have way to much traffic and no Inlet or Pass as they call them down here. Not much in the way of crime in Destin or Navarre area mostly minor stuff. Hospitals are ok and schools are good if you need them.

You may want to also consider several areas on the back side of the bay such as Bluewater bay Niceville Fl Rocky Bayou all of which are in Okaloosa county it is a very clean affordable palce to live with easy accsess to the pass in Destin about 3.5NM inshore fishing is decent.

PSJ very nice clean quit little town key words is quiet not much there but the people are some of the nicest folks you ever want to meet. The pass is wonderful but its a long ride to 100 Fathoms (70nm) and the rigs would be out of the question for you from that port. Best inshore fishing around here in that area hands down. Cost of living is next to nothing. But as I mentioned before they roll up the sidewalks at sundown think Mayberry that the type of town it is.

Panama City wouldnt even consider it for me and my family its way to rowdy over there for me and the fishing isnt all that great either.

Daystar 2, I have lived in Crystal River 20 years and to be honest the city & county comissioners seem hell bent on closing the city as I feel it is decaying .Truly a Great sheriff's Dept and crime level is below natl aveage a good bit (no local PD in Citrus county) How ever county stagnant

The flats inshore are great fishing , how ever to get out to deep water 45-60-70 (For Big Bend area thats deep ) it is long run of 35-40 mile and with fuel cost not feasable in my view, I have fished P city with local buddie and did well Gag/ Red snapper only few mile out in 100-125 ft .The menu of fish out of pan handle is some what different also .

It only stands to reason Metro areas have more to offer, which is lacking in Citrus county, personally your decision to stay in Panhandle a wise one.

Now why in hell you leaving Polson, MT and the Flathead lake ( cold winter) been there twice coming from Galcier Natl on M/C Fantastic country, just great Sights ,went on to Missoula then south to Stanley ID. For sure Big Blue Sky area.

Leave Snow behind, Bring Huckleberries, love em Tin Can

PSJ area has a lot more tripletail and way more tarpon, though tarpon do come around more west a little. As said, the closer to Pensacola you are the closer to the deeper water and way closer to the rigs. I have not fished PSJ and PC a lot but the bottom fishing for snapper/ grouper and bay fishing is pretty similar everywhere, PSJ may be slightly better inshore but not a lot.

Thanks for the info. I realize the further west, better, and closer in is the offshore fishing. And, Pensacola has other things to offer, especially concerning my wife. She loves to sing, is trained and is very involved with her church choir and a secular choir. I am not a church person myself, though I am a bible believer, etc. That being said, I am mostly interested in the offshore scene, though I do enjoy good seafood places, and also hope that there is a sporting clays range nearby.
Tincan, we have been going to Crystal River for a few years now. You might have noticed a blue panga in the area. Fishing is good inside, and tripletail is one the best kept secrets there. I lived in the cape area for 20 years, and did alot of cobia and tt fishing there, but, my biggest cobes were out of CR, one over 70 lbs. Of course that is nothing compared to what the people get out PC. CR does not offer the offshore fishing. Even though we considered the Stuart area, fished out of there, Sebastian, the Cape for alot of years, we just feel it is to busy.
Montana? If I could sell the home in Polson, we would buy in West Yellowstone. We spend alot of time there. Great flyfishing. You mentioned Id. We will be doing the Clearwater river next week for steelhead, and then the Salmon toward the end of Oct.
I do not like the winters here anymore, though I miss my labs and the great bird hunting that Mt offers.
Thanks for the advices....

If your looking for a little less crowd, more land/house for the money, look right across the border in Alabama. There are houses for sale and rent right on the water to keep your boats and easy access to the Gulf.

This, if I was looking to buy I would start in Seminole and work south following the bay. Good property decent price low cost of living and low crime. Outlets for the old lady 30 mins away and not far from I10.

If offshore is your passion and you will consider Alabama. Orange beach hands down no question about it would be a better fit for you and it has a lot of the same qualities as PSJ and none of the Panama city draw backs.

I have a 65' vacant lot on the water on Innerarity Point on the mouth of Bayou Garcon. Perdido Bay side. Build a house, keep both boats on lifts in 6' of water! 7 miles from Orange Beach pass, and 17 miles from Pcola pass. Fantastic inshore fishing 100' away. Quiet and relatively inexspensive for deep water front.
