We went on the red light tour friday night it was a combination of the history of brothels in pensacola and some ghost stories thrown in. The tour guide "candy" made it hard not to pay attention in her period working girl/ vampire costume. It was well worth checking out.

Milton gets macabre for Halloween

Haunted house bound to scare all those who dare to enter

Jahna Jacobson Pelican correspondent ? Duncan has 17 years of experience in creating haunted houses and knows what it takes to scare you silly.

"The biggest thing is playing on people's fears and with their eyesight," he said. "We use strobe lights, dark corridors, noises, anything that messes with their minds. If they can't see, then they get scared."

Once you are disoriented and vulnerable, Duncan and his crew of volunteer actors go in for the kill.

"We have everything from spiders to clowns to little children," he said, refusing to reveal any more of the house's horrible secrets. "As H.P. Lovecraft said, the oldest and strongest of human emotions is fear, and the greatest fear is fear of the unknown."

The 6,000-square-foot haunted house includes two floors full of horror scenarios, connected by narrow hallways, and, new this year, the option to crawl through a terrifying tunnel.

"You go from room to room, and they all have different scenes, and a couple of them are from scary movies," said Kim McCarthy, president of Mainstreet Milton, which organizes the annual event. "We have narrowed the hallways this year, which makes it even scarier, so if you have claustrophobia, you have to face that fear."

Builders have been working on the project for weeks, she said.

"We're pretty excited," she said. "It is several steps above what we did last year in quality. People have been up there hammering and sawing and working like crazy."

All of the actors in the house are volunteers who just love the chance to dress up and get scary, she said.

"We have some really, really talented people," she said. "We just ask for volunteers, and they stepped forward and are doing a great job."

The event, which begins the same night as the Milton Ghost Walk, is part of Mainstreet Milton's efforts to bring people to the historic downtown.

"Our historic building is so appropriate to hold a haunted house in," she said. "And we have kept our price at $5 even though we have really upped the quality. It's a real bargain."

"People are walking around for the Ghost Walk, then they hop over for the haunted house," McCarthy said. "It's fun to see the downtown come alive after dark."

For Duncan, the event is a chance to share is love of horror, fun, and illusion with the community.

"It's my passion," he said. "And every one of the rooms has the 'oomph,' from the time people are standing in line until the time they make it out the back door."
