I need some gear help/opions. I will be fishing primarily from a kayak inshore, but will go in the gulf once I get comfortable.

I've just acquired a Penn 8500ss reel paired with a 7' heavy action Penn slammer rod. I'm guessing that this combo will pretty much treat me right for anything in the gulf I can reach from a yak,but how will this setup work in the bays? I'll probably target reds and specs, maybe some sheep's. Is it too much and maybe I should use it more to troll and get a smaller combo for my go-to? Or will I be fine with it?

Thanks for any advice...I'm new to this stuff.

Me personally use a 40/4000 series for my live bait setup

For my artificial rods I am using a 2500/3000 (30) series reel on a 7' medium action rod. Have a few older Penn 2500 SS reels and a 3500 that with a Okuma 30 series spinner I use frequently.

On my bait setup just the butt section makes it cumbersome to cast for any frequency.

In all honesty for inshore flats/shallow water all you need is a reel rated for 8-12lb test and a good 7 foot rod. Most of what you will catch will be well within the capacity of that reel. In basically 35 years of inshore fishing never have had a shallow water trout or red spool me.

Lots of decent combos out there for less than 100 bucks that will suit your needs. Plueger, Daiwa, Shimano, Okuma, even Penn to name a few. Proper care and periodic maintenance after the trip will make them last.

I've been using Penn Battle 4000 w/ 20 lb braid on 7 ft medium action rod and catching bulls with no issues...

It's going too be too big for specks and sheep's but good for larger fish. If you get a decent 3000-4000 it will be perfect for specks, slot reds and sheep's and can handle big reds too if you work it right.

Look into the Penn Fierce combo in a 3000 or 4000 size. They are a pretty good deal for less than $100
