The Gulf Coast Kayak Fishing Association is hosting a kayak safety seminar on the UWF campus.

On Wednesday, June 5th from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Aquatic Center of the University of West Florida (UWF) located on the UWF campus, 11000 University Pkwy, Pensacola, FL 32514. The Gulf Coast Kayak Fishing Association will present a kayak safety seminar that will be open to the public.

Summer is here in full effect and there are plenty of kayaks on the water. While kayak fishing can be a very rewarding and enjoyable sport, there are also many risks involved as there are with any activity involving the sea. Fortunately, these risks are often avoidable through experience, knowledge, and proper use of safety equipment. The GCKFA is hosting a Kayak Safety Seminar that will provide information, tips, and practical hands-on exercises that will keep members and the local kayak angler community safer on the water by practicing risk mitigation.

Parking is available in lot E. Follow signs to the classroom area. For additional information about this seminar or the GCKFA, please contact club Secretary Taylor Simmons via email: [email protected]

Topics covered include Kayak Safety Requirements, Recommended & Proper Usage of Safety Gear, Self-Rescue Tactics and Kayak Re-Entry. Subject matter experts will be available for Q&A. Kayaks will be provided for the hands-on re-entry segment. Optionally, you can bring your own unrigged kayak to perform the exercise.

The seminar will be free to members and $10 for non-members. Annual club membership registration will be available to non-members on-site for $30 which includes a club t-shirt and free tuition.

The seminar is in two sections - first, class room briefs on kayak safety equipment and use, self-rescue with subject matter experts on hand. Then, we go to the pool for in-water practice and training. You can bring your own kayak (unrigged) or there will be kayaks provided.

It is an excellent opportunity to practice getting back in your kayak in a controlled situation. If you are unsure of how to get back on your kayak, would like some practice and raise your confidence on the water - come join us in the pool. Come ready to get wet... This kind of training can save your life.
