The UWF Continuing Education class, "ABCs of Fishery Science and Management for Fishermen" will not be offered unless a minimum number are enrolled! We are going to miss an exceptional opportunity to discuss the issues and the science, and learn how we can become more involved in the management process.Details: 6:30-8:30; 4/15, 4/22, 4/29; Bowden Bldg downtown Pensacola; $20 registration; 474-2914 or 473-7468

Someone please explain why you wouldn't be interested?

Excerpt from the class description: ?Rules, regulations and limits: Is there sense to be made of fisheries management? Several fisheries issues in the northern Gulf of Mexico are very contentious among fishing groups, and between fishing groups and managers. One goal of this short course will be to separate common misconceptions from objective information with respect to fisheries issues in the northern Gulf?what data are collected?how data are analyzed to produce estimates of fish stock status?over fished vs. not over fished?over fishing occurring vs. not occurring?implications of the reauthorized Magnuson-Stevens Act?ways for fishermen to get involved in the management process??

UWF Professor, Dr Will Patterson, is the instructor. One of his current projects: Examination of red snapper fisheries ecology on the northwest Florida shelf; recent publication: Red Snapper Ecology and Fisheries on the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

I have spoken to Professor Patterson before. It is very interesting to hear how they capture the data, measure the fish with underwater equipment etc. He has statistics for how much of a percentage snapper make up at an average reef and other information. Well worth the price of admission.

I'm interested to learn more about this class.

I called the number and was told the class was scheduled for April 15th - April 29th; however, only one has signed up and most likely will be canceled. Is the course really a fourteen day course from 18:30 - 20:30?I couldn't swing the whole 14 day class but would be interested if it were a one night event.

Island24 thanks for the comment. Jimmy, the class is only 3 nights, 4/15, 4/22, and 4/22, 2 hrs each night. If it dosen't make in April let's build support for May.
