That is a mangrove snapper for sure.

People will often mistakenly call them black snapper around here but the correct ID is mangrove snapper.

Yup, call em black, gray, mangrove snapper. It's all the same here in Pensacola. Caught a few big sombitches offshore last few years. I thought they were cubera or dog snapper till I did a little research. Dad caught one in '09 that was within a pound of the state record...and it was on a crowded public reef. We caught six over six pounds that day!

Just cuz I'm thinking bout it. Does anybody here remember how good the black snapper fishing was on Ft Pickens pier when the park was closed from Ivan? Best I've ever seen. Could get a 10 fish limit in a couple hours for like two months straight.

I've always called them black snapper, but mangrove is more common.
