Fish cleaning station surface options

I'm needing to build a new fish cleaning station, not sure of the top surface. Stainless is clean, dulls knives quickly. Corian is good, howbeit expensive to buy new. Plywood is ok for a season or two, hard to keep clean. Starboard is also expensive, not sure how it would hold up.

I do have some 1/4" sheets of plexiglass. Any thoughts of how this would hold up to the elements?

if you have plex i glass, i'd use it. i don't se why it wouldn't work. we use it for bulletin board covers and it seems to hold up to the sun pretty good and if you have quite a bit of it you could change out the surface from time to time. you could paint the under side also.

My suggestion

Go to a restaurant supply house and get the largest cutting board they have. We have one that is mounted on an angle iron frame mounted on our rig offshore and it has been there for over a decade. A little faded, but still good to go. If it isn't to your liking after it ages, take a belt sander to it to freshen it up. I like them as you can bleach the heck out of it to get rid of the bacteria... and it is easy to use, not bad on your knives, easy to cut with a router or saw, and works cheaply!

I have an old stainless steel cabinet door (heavy duty) that I use at home. I got the door as a freebie, and I put my cutting boards on the stainless surface.

I'm with Ed on this one - plywood! I don't like my fish to be sliding around while I'm working on them, and it's easier on a knife blade than other surfaces. Cleanup with a Chlorox solution and a deck brush. Only lasts a few seasons? Big f'ing deal. Replacement is cheap and easy.

If you saw my deer/fish cleaning station I did, I made my top outta granite. It's not slick smooth so it should grip purty well. I have a big odd shaped spare piece but you wouldn't get a really wide table out of it. Maybe 18-20 inches? Not sure on length....

How about having strips of wood to box in the cutting board so it stays in that spot and taking it off to clean /store out of the weather? Drill holes in the corners of the strips thru the table to drain.
