Headed out with Ken and David as crew. Had a bait tank full of pinfish. Gorgeous day and hopes were high.
Hit the Edge spot around 9:00, first drop Ken hooks a nice AJ. Looking good!
Next drop Ken hooks a nice blackfin on bottom? Not complaining at all just strange.
After that it was AJ mania. We caught our limit and couldn't get away from them. Something hit the drift line as we were pulling anchor. Mahi! The bull had hit the fly line and was off to the races. Around the anchor line of course but we untangled him. Meanwhile David hooked the cow and of course, it ran right into the anchor line too. But we managed to get a gaff in it, two bonus mahi in the box!
Moved to another spot and we became a magnet for other boats. A crew in an old whaler seemed determined to hook our anchor line and sure enough, they did eventually. So the kid straps on the belt and everything, and fought the anchor for about 20 minutes (you know how the rope and chain "gives" and feels like it's pulling back.) They eventually figured it out and cut their line.
We kept getting pounded by AJs not a grouper to be had. So we moved deeper and I found a small spot in 250ish feet that lit up pretty good. Tried to deep drop but this little area was chock full of AJs.
After a while we headed North and fished some floating stuff but no peanuts showed up. Plenty of small tripletail layed up right on the top of the mats of seaweed.
Cleaned fish for a while and had an adult beverage to celebrate.
Finally a good day!
