I have been a long time lurker on this sight and found a lot of usefull information. I always see where people are talking about fishing drop offs and am curious how much of a drop off is necessary? Can it be just a couple of feet? Does it have to be a steep drop off or can it be more gradual? I mostly target specks and red fish when I go out and sometimes get lucky and others not so much.

A few feet of elevation change inshore can make a big difference. If you're talking about the flats, going from 1 to 3 feet can be a drop off or ledge. If you're talking about the bay, 10-20ft might be a drop off... It all depends on the area that you're fishing. Of course each person you talk to might give you a different answer but that's my attempt at ballparking it.

Thanks for the info. I mostly fish the southern part of Wolf Bay and its not very deep so I was curious what people look for when looking for drop offs.
