What do you stand to catch if you soak a livie or a shrimp around the shallowest rigs off Dolphin Island in late January or February? Did it in September one year and got a few big redfish, flounder and bluefish and assorted pogies and mingos.

Really hoping for flounder and redfish.

Sheephead will do. Kind of like eating a three pound shrimp, in my book.

We are limited by fact that our boat is only 18 feet.

I found that the sheepies move around, so if you don't get a strike pretty fast go to the other legs of the rig, if nothing then move to the next rig. Once you are on them prepare to fillup the cooler.

What about now - mid & late January? Will the sheepshead be there?

Here's a cool trip for sheepies, take a wooden paddle with you and every once in a while pull up close enough to rub the barnacles off of the rig legs and watch the feeding frenzy begin! If they are there and hungry they will come up to the top and feed on anything you throw in the mix! We used to do this on the pier with a cinder block tied to a rope! Good fun and awesome when you find a rig with a ton of them under it!
