I just recently gave a safety seminar at the Biloxi Boat Show. There were a lot of questions about chart symbols.

Chart symbols and icons will have different meanings. Generally all of the symbols, abbreviations and icons found on our charts are based on those of the government. For a full listing you can find this document on the NOAA website at https://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/publications/docs/us-chart-1/ChartNo1.pdf.

The Navionics Mobile App is super easy to use if you don't have a plotter and you can get chart details directly on the map screen by using the cross hairs. Tap the pop-up or the question mark to go to the object information screen. You will receive a list of icons/objects in the general area and you can find more information by tapping the ones with an arrow ( > ) symbol.

Thank you, this is a very good resource. When I went to school I enjoyed being taught how to read charts and navigate using them. We rely so much today on electronics, but it is still important to be able to read charts.
