Bush hogging question

519 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Outside9
Got about 20-25 acres that I want to bush hog while it’s reasonably dry. I have a pretty solid Turkey population and I really don’t want to potentially impact the nesting. When would it be reasonably safe to resume bush hogging?

I dont do mine till first week of June just for that very reason even though it always needs it right about now.

I figure after the spanking we took at Seminole following your report, I should defintely heed your advice.

We fished out of Howells Landing yesterday and my goodness that place is confusing to run. I dont have anything by way of electronics on that boat and we ended up in a vast mess of tree stumps just below the water line. That was a good time. Squeaked through and looked at alligators. My son had no less than 500 crickets loose in the boat. So that was a good time too. I had them up my shirt, in my hair, in my beard..... We only bought a hundred but I swear there seemed to be 5 times that amount. Couldnt buy a bite. Wind was cranking pretty good.

Ouch! Yeah there is a lot of stumps in certain areas there. I imagine you probably took a hard left and went north along the western shore? Me and my 2 kids went back saturday afternoon, found somebody in "my hole" from friday's catch, and decided to hit the edge of that stumpy area-it will make you pucker up. Took an hour just for 8 keepers. My 2 pitched a fit that i went without them friday so i couldnt let them down. I havent worked that hard in a while-baiting 3 hooks constantly, getting them unsnagged in the jungles there, chasing crickets,-i was wooped. Not far off from a mayfly hatching and i will shoot you a pm when it does, its pretty fun and worth the trip.

Thats exactly where we were. Keep me posted. It was fun to get out there. I want to go north to the other ramp next time. A bit to much bass boat traffic where we were.

Saw the first turkey chick’s yesterday, just about quail size. To slow on the camera to get a picture. Counted 9 of them, probably more were in the weeds.
Also saw two pairs of quail. That the first I’ve seen in years. We did a prescribed burn last year. Did a lot of good. Will continue every other year for the next few years.

Then in June you will be jumping newborn yearlings. I try to avoid cutting this time of year but it’s near impossible.
