are all boats sanded before bottom paint is put on?

just wondering, i have a 10 or so year old boat that has bottom paint, its in so-so condition, but a ugly color, the boat is lift kept so i dont really need it, was looking at diff solvents designed to remove biult up bottom paint...

but my question is what condition should i expect to find the gelcoat under the ablative paint?

i guess what im asking is once a boat bottom is painted does it always have to have paint?

Aircraft remover will get the bulk of it off depending on how many layers it has on it. Sanding and re-gel coating or hard bottom painting is another option if the hull looks jacked up. Hard bottom paints like Petit Vivid or Interlux VC Offshore look good and are perfect if your boat is rack or trailer kept. Good luck, your gonna need it. :hotsun
