I fished quite a bit this week and saw what I believe were bonito chasing bait all over. I threw everything I could think of at them, trilled bonito jigs and cranks with no luck. How in the hell do you catch these things?

Find out exactly what they are feeding on match it to the T. And try to play keep away.Don't let them have time to eye it keep it burning/snatching like your trying to keep them from catching it.

They were Bonita but theyre chasing fry so small you can’t match the hatch without a fly rod and they don’t want anything g bigger
ok thank you for the confirmation. I am new to this so I wasn’t sure they were bonito or not. What I saw them chasing around the Perdido bridge was no longer than 1/2” fry. I’m glad I am not that terrible of a fisher man lol.

i saw them as well. pretty cool seeing hundreds of them schooled up in 5 feet of water near bayou grande. they were eating tiny rain minnows. i got lucky and snagged a few in the school for offshore bait.

Dammit now I am mad lol. I love fly fishing and I didn't even take mine this trip. I had it the last couple times and never had the opportunity to break it out. Oh well I'm still learning this salty thing. Been a fresh water fisherman my entire life and the salt is humbling me some. I'm ready to get back already. Got home last night around 8pm. Woke up this morning to snow flurries.....(n)

Look at the date of the post, quite a while ago. He said he would be chasing the schools all day and maybe got a chance to throw the fly a couple times.
The videos were the special times for sure. I haven't seen huge schools of feeding frenzies like those for many years.

Sorry for the confusion. I realized this was a while ago. My post was more meant that I am mad at myself for not thinking about the fly rod and being able to use it. I could have had a few decent chances with it and bet I could have gotten my first fish on the fly in the salt.

I launched at Galvez and headed east to Pensacola, they were busting up all through the No Wake, Saturday - March 11.
I had my 13 year-old goddaughter and her best buddy out for some Tube pulling. They enjoyed seeing the activity.
We left at 1:30 pm and when we returned at dusk, the activity was still happening big time.
