My stepson and I got on the water at first light and at the first stop quickly caught a few keeper specks. I had a huge blow up on a super spook but the fish missed so I continued to walk it slowly back to the boat and a 33 inch red scarfed it down only about 10 feet from the boat. I landed and released the big red and then headed for a new spot. Caught a 20 and a 22 inch speck at the 2nd location and then the bite slowed. We continued to fish and caught a few more specks and a nice 26 inch red. Overall a pretty slow morning but a beautiful day to be on the water.

Final count

12-15 specks from 12-22 inches in length
2 reds each measuring 33 and 26 inches

All fish were caught on super spook jrs, mirrodine 17m, and a fluke on a quarter ounce jig.

WTH??? I was in the blackwater just south of I-10 and didn't get a single bite all day. I tried a couple places Oscar (OxBeast) showed me and a spot my buddy Nick likes. Nothing. We tried Super Spook Jrs., gold and silver spoons, gulp shrimp and jerk shad, a Rat-l-trap and a Rattlin' Chug Bug. Nothing. I had a massive gar surface near one of my topwaters, but when I saw it, I yanked it away real quick.
We got off to a late start, because the boat we rented on a trailer from the MWR had a bad engine. So we ended up getting a discounted rate on their bass boat. The whole fiasco did lead to us meeting a retired Marine pilot who took us trolling out on his boat after we turned in the rental. My son hooked a 17" trout, my buddy a 12-13" trout, and I again had a massive gar (this time he took the rat-l-trap and got on the line). I brought the thing right up next to the boat no problem. He must've been swimming right for us, because when he got up to the boat, my rod just bent in half and he was all over the place. He went straight for the back of the boat where the other 3 trolling lines were, and that was a mess! He ended up snapping the line before my son could get the net under him and I watched the blue back of my rat-l-trap swim out in his jaws... :(
Over all the worst day fishing since I've started. Guess I just wasn't in the right place. The tides and all other conditions looked like it should've been one of the best.

I also thought that the bite would have been better because the tides seemed to be perfect. We managed a few fish but had to really work for them and the bites were few and far between. I honestly don't think that the fish have really made their fall migration yet. We probably need some more nights in the 40s and below. This time last year there was a lot of fish in Blackwater but based on my recent experience I don't think they are thick there yet. However, Blackwater will get better with time.

We were out yesterday on Black Water and didn't see a lot of action either. We caught one Spec that was a keeper and the gentleman that was with me caught a very nice 5 lb Stripper on a grub of all things. I've yet to catch a fish on any of the Spooks, but I'm gonna keep trying them due to all of you catching fish on them. As far as the mullet, they were so thick I made only one throw and stopped. I had 15 and that was enough.

Which bait produced more?

The spook caught the biggest red of the day and the 2nd largest speck. I also hooked another large red on the spook that pulled loose.

The mirrodine 17m produced the largest sized and biggest number of legal specks. I also caught the 26 inch red on the mirrodine.

The fluke produced some fish as well and I also hooked a very large speck on the fluke that pulled loose.

Overall, I probably caught the most fish on the mirrodine. For me it seemed to be the catch bait of the day.

Hey Dabutcher, ya'll put in right behind us. I was the guy walking to the boat launch when you pulled up. Glad to see someone found the fish, we found a school of specks early, managed a couple of keepers out of them, then the bite turned off for us. Fished the back side of Peterson Point, Dad caught a flounder that would probably go about 2 lbs or so, overall, pretty slow day for us as well.
