Once you have purged out all of the sulfuric acid, properly disposed of it, and drained any residualliquid out - a sledge hammer would probably be the best way. Keep in mind, however, that there is more in there than just lead. The plates are typically a lead/antimony/calcium alloy with vaying amounts of lead sulfate.

As mentioned above, it's not worth messing with it. Takethe batteryto a disposal place. There is one on the corner of Fairfield and Palafox that will pay you a few bucks for a used battery. I saw the sign as I drove by. There are a fewothers in the Pensacola area. Then use the money to buy pure lead.

i thought about this a couple months ago. research it on line. battery lead has some bad stuff in it. also i tore one apart and like mentioned earlier, it's not worth the trouble. i was told to ask tire stores for old wheel balance weights. ebay store- Guaranteed Sinkers- has free shipping and they are pretty cheap .
