Once you have purged out all of the sulfuric acid,properly disposed of it, and drained any residualliquid out - a sledge hammer would probably be the best way. Keep in mind, however, that there is more in there than just lead. The plates are typically a lead/antimony/calcium alloy with vaying amounts of lead sulfate.

Itried it once and the amount of lead I got out of it was not worth the effort.

Stick with the cable ends. All you have to deal with is the nuts and bolts in the lead.

As mentioned above, it's not worth messing with it. Takethe batteryto a disposal place. There is one on the corner of Fairfield and Palafox that will pay you a few bucks for a used battery. I saw the sign as I drove by. There are a fewothers in the Pensacola area. Then use the money to buy pure lead.

i thought about this a couple months ago. research it on line. battery lead has some bad stuff in it. also i tore one apart and like mentioned earlier, it's not worth the trouble. i was told to ask tire stores for old wheel balance weights. ebay store- Guaranteed Sinkers- has free shipping and they are pretty cheap .

Another supply spot for lead is a roofing business.



The lead boots that are taken off older roofs add up fast.

I agree with the other guys on here because i spent 2 hours get about 3 pounds of lead out of a battery and dident think its was worth all the trouble i wont do it again.
