I just bought 2 kayaks off PFF and they both have trolling motors and full size batteries. They are strapped to the top/back of the kayak in plastic battery boxes. Being new to kayak fishing im just wondering how careful i have to be about these batteries staying completely dry? They are marine Exxide batteries but the box is obviously not in an air/water tight space so water will be a factor.
Just wanted to hear thoughts or safety tips or lessons learned......

If they are dry batteries or gel batteries you can just rinse them off outside the box, if they got splashed. If they are lead/acid (wet) batteries, you have to leave the vents in the battery boxes or you will build up explosive pressure due to the batteries venting gas.

You can just rinse both of them off when you are done. Neither kind have to stay completely dry or even dry but I would keep them in the boxes. Salt water won't be great for terminals and wiring but they will be OK until you get home after each trip.
