they're on a shrimp boat in south carolina, and apparently they dragged their nets for 45 minutes... and had enough bycatch to fill a 55 gallon drum, croakers, ribbonfish, flounder, pufferfish, pinfish, blue crabs, horse-shoe crabs, stingrays... and the majority had died by the time they picked out the300 or so shrimp they caught....

90% bycatch is typical. Same thing happens in Pensacola bay. Not as much now because low shrimp prices and high fuel prices make it so it is barely worthwhile to go shrimping. A lot of the small bay shrimp boats go at night and will cull their last drag as they are coming in to the dock in the morning. A lot of small fish are killed to get the shrimp.
