I recently purchased my son a 243 WSSM. My question is what is the best ammo for whitetail deer? The guy I bought the rifle from gave me a few boxes of Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip 243 WSSM 55GR and the same ammo in 95GR. My son is 10 years old and about 70 lbs.

Does the 55GR have enough knockdown power or should I use the 95GR?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

If I were you I would stick with the 95gr bullet. The 243 is such a small projectile already, that you need as much mass as possible when shooting deer sized game. If you or your son is an extremely good shot you could use the 55gr but I really would stick with the larger projectile.

go to the different ammo manufactures web sites and check the ballistics. My youngest son is 9 and shoots a 7.08 so I look at the energy at 200 yards. You may also want to consider the bullet drop but energy is the key. Good luck

Don't shoot deer square on the shoulder with ballistic tip ammo at close range.

BT's tend to explode at close range and don't penetrate too well ,good luck to you and your son.

Save your brass someday you might need to reload it .

243 WSSM also comes in a 100 grain, but the ballistics for the 95 has better ballistics and has more energy.

I have shot deer with the WSSM 243 95 grain at 10 yards out to 365 yards and not one ever went more than 40 yards.

I shoot a Browning A-Bolt 243wssm with the Winchester supreme ballistic tip 95 grain bullets and it has almost no recoil. The barrel on my rifle is extra thick so the recoil is straight back rather than a little up. I don't know what rifle you bought so it's hard to answer the recoil question. But like I said it has very little recoil. I have knocked deer down at 425 yds.
