I managed to get in bed a little early on New Years Eve so me and my buddy Jimmy could go fishing. Wanted to start the year out right. Hopefully fishing the first day of the year will set the pace for the rest of the year......

I woke up at about 4 that morning to the sound of the wind blowing. I had been watching the weather reports, but I was holding out hoping they were wrong this time. Its funny how its never better thanthe forecast, always worse.I fell back asleepalreadypreparing my mind for a miserable day on the water. Thankfully I took the time to doa little snooping around on google earth and found an area we could fish that would be very protected from a north wind. The ICW between the Choc. river andWest Bay.

We hooked up the boat at about 7:30 and headed out in search of live shrimp. First stop Half Hitch...CLOSED. Second stop Harbor Walk...CLOSED. Well, there goes sheephead fishing. From Destin we had about an hour drive to the launch and made a little detour down 331 in search of bait. There was a store open. "Do you have live shrimp?" She answered back with "yeah, $6 a dozen".......What..... Shrimp were pitiful on top of that and were counted by hand. So I am officially starting a boycott of that place, absolutely ridiculous, but we were deperate.

We launched to boat and fished the bridge at highway 79. The current was riping, but my first cast produced a break off from a good sized fish. We were instantly stoked. Jimmy throws a bait back.....BOOM! The fish screams for the pilings and Jimmy manages to pull it away. Black drum. Kind of like a step above a catfish, but it was fun.

After that we started getting eat up by croakers or some other bait stealers. Can't afford that at 50 cents a shrimp.......that still makes me sick... We moved around a few times and decided to come back later when the tide wasn't screaming out. We went out towards the bay, but it was just too windy to fish. So we headed up the ICW. For the next couple of hours we fished anything that was a little different than the surroundings. Creek mouths, docks, rock piles. Everywhere produced minature specs. Probably caught 30 of the little guys.

We managed to turn a miserable day into a fun day of fishing. Next time I'm bring the shellcracker tackle.
