Chris (Privat Pilot) and I hit the water at O'Dark:30 this morning hoping for a little topwater action from some big specks. We pulled up to the hole just as light was coming over the horizon. Chris hooked up but lost a decent speck on the 1st cast, then I had a hit and spit on my second. Shortly after that Chris managed a nice 22incher to his yak for a pic and release. The topwater bite seemed to shut off pretty quickly after that so I switched to a big shallow diving crankbait. Which shortly thereafter was crushed by a 22.5inch red. And I do mean CRUSHED! He bent both split rings so bad that the forward treble broke off into the fish's mouth as soon as I had it in the boat. It took a little finagling but I managed to extract it without any damage to the fish. Then a pic and back in the water he went.
After that, I had one more swing and a miss but couldn't get any bites the next 30min. Chris had left already to get back to work and I followed shortly thereafter to get to work myself. Now, I'm in the process of upgrading my trebles and split rings to make sure they can't get squished as easily next time.
A little dark still and my zoom was maxed out, good speck but the pic doesn't do it justice. I need a better camera.
Red in the net, poor beasty still had my treble stuck in his mouth.
Red about to be released, minus treble.
