Got a call late friday night from a friend asking me if i wanted to get in on the closed area hunt on eglin and if i did i would have to be at jackson guard at 4 am and ready to go. (and to bring 50.00 b/c thats what he had to pay to reserve the spot.) Needless to say i didnt think twice and went.

We met our guide at jackson guard and followed him out to the middle of nowhere just north of navarre and showed us the parcel we had to hunt. At about 6 am i got all my stuff togeather and decided to sit on a clear cut. I climbed a tree and hung on (wind blowin pretty had and was on a small tree) at around 0800 i see two cayotes runningpretty hard accross the clear cut. I put the cross hairs on em and shoot. Yep you guessed it i missed. So i was tired of sittin in the tree and kind of cold so i got down to do a little scouting for the afternoon hunt. I began walkin real slow down the road to the south end of the section we had. When igot to the end the road it T'd and dropped off into a swamp. I immedietly saw 3does running to the west about 50 yards from me through some really thick oaks. Ieased up on topof a little hill and sawa really dark deer with its head down. I put the cross hairs on it and he picked up his head. Instant adrenaline...i sawthe horns and decided to shoot b/c i new he was pretty big. (shot was at about 0850) I shot him right in the shoulder and he dropped in his tracks. I walked over to himandwas shocked b/c he was bigger then i thought.Deer ended up being a typical 8 point weighing 142 poundssupporting a 17 inch inside spread.

We got thisdeer out of thewoods and cleaned up and backwas back in the woodsby1300.On the way in i noticedanother pretty big foot over our truck tracks and marked it. The guide dropped me off and left again so i started easing up the road to where i saw the track. I got about 120 yards away from the track (atleast from what gps said) and saw one doe running HARD to the east. I clicked my safety off and waited and not even10 seconds lateranother rack buck stepsout and hes MOVING! I put the cross hair on his shoulder the best i could and pulled the trigger.(shot about 1330 hrs)His feet went into the air and he took off straight up the road. Ichambered another round and shot again this time hittin him in his right buttcheak causinghim to some what do a flip and drop. I walked up to the deer and checked himout and to my suprise my first shot was pretty good just a little low on the shoulder. (deer would have dropped pretty fast even if i didnt shoot again) Anyway we go himout and cleaned him up. He ended up being a typical 8weighing 122 pounds supporting a 15 1/4 inside spread.

Both deer killed with a .270 shooting el cheapo 130 grain remington core-lokt bullets.

Here is the pics.

Nice one. There have been some good bucks killed in BW and Eglin this year.

I shoot 130gr corelokts in my .270 and my .300. Haven't ever lost a deer with either of them. I would shoot them in my 308 but it groups the hornadys spbt's a little better.
