Default Steelhead cowlitz river

Working in Washington state for a few weeks. Got a chance to go steelhead fishing on the cowlitz river. Wish I had my kayak!

Looks like you had a great time. Are they fun to catch?

Nice hatchery steel. I fish the Cow regularly - this year's winter run is supposed to be epic if you are here through March/April, you will swing into some chrome gators.

A fresh, bright fish from the ocean that is full of fat and pissed off is like hooking a jumping permit.

Default RE: Dunt on Cowlitz

Dunt you are so right. Pound for pound one of the meanest fish I have ever caught. This one was 34" long and just a little under 15lbs. He was a summer run steelhead at the end of the "A" run on the Cowlitz. I caught a few more but he was the largest hatchery fish. All others were wild and were released unharmed. I wish I could stay for the "B" run of winters on the Cowlitz. We have to go home this week. I caught a few chinook in the big fall run on the Cowlitz but I have to say the steelhead are what you get addicted to catching.

WAReilly- They are a mixture of power, speed, and acrobatics. It took me 20 minutes to land this one and believe me they know how to use the current to their advantage.

Got this one on the Elochoman River down the road from my house. A winter run fresh from the ocean. He was chrome bright!
