Default Something BIG on 10/20

I put out at Navarre Beach on Saturday and just as I was about to call it quits for the day with my last bait in the water I hooked something huge... I never saw it, it dove deep and ran a ways. Then it just seemed to lunker around on the bottom almost directly under my kayak most of the time.
I never really gained any line back, every time I managed to get some reeled in the thing would do some erratic kicks and make a crazy powerful run. I've never hear my reel make noises it made... thought it was sure to spool me. I really wanted to see whatever it was so fought it for about 45 minutes, but I had drifted / gotten pulled about a mile back out to the gulf and I didn't get the impression that it was tired in the least. I kept tightening my drag thinking either it would surface or my line would break (20# braid) but neither happened and it was so strong it almost pulled me over sideways several times - struggled to keep it in front of my yak and not off the side. I gave up, cut the line and spent an hour paddling back in... think it was a shark, dolphin or turtle?

No shortage of them anywhere right now. If it was a blackfin, you would've felt a constant pulsing of its tail and it wouldn't have required as much pressure to turn. A big shark gets down, spreads its pectorals and just hunkers down. I caught a big sandbar shark about 5yrs ago from my yak that was prob about 7-8ft. I didn't really raise it as much as it finally came up itself. On 20lb mono I just couldn't budge it.

I will join the shark chorus as that is exactly what it is like to battle one. Good call on cutting the line. Sometimes it is best to just cut and run rather than get too far off shore and tired - not a safe combo.

I'm no experienced gulf fisherman but had a similar hookup off Johnson. About pulled the rod out of my hands a couple times. I was more certain of shark since it bit through my 60lb single strand and curled the rest of it.
