Default Skunked in the Gulf

Spent a few hours in the gulf today.

Complete skunk again.

Conditions: windy, but pretty flat, launch was as good as it gets, even 2 miles out the chop was minimal, stayed pretty dry.

On the way I bought frozen cigs, wasn't sure how bait would be. I *shouldn't* have needed them... bait was everywhere at 10-20' depth. Opened up a brand new sabiki and rigged it, hooked up on the first drop and then pop! Something bit it clean in two right below the swivel as I was reeling in that first cast. Wasn't smart enough to have a backup. Started throwing a silver gotcha thinking maybe Spanish were around, but didn't get a single hit. Hooked up two frozen cigs: one with a weighted pink duster and one just on a king rig with no duster. Pulled them around 20-30' depth following the bait schools and birds for about an hour with no nibbles at all, so I trolled out to sand flea reef complex and tried dropping cut ruby red lips, whole cigsicles and chartreuse buck tail jigs with no bites.. Again. So, I continued drifting with the winds to the southern end of sand flea, paddled all the way back to Henderson State Park with zero bites out of my cigsicles.

High point of the day: saw a big fish sky over the reef complex, think it was a BFT but too far to be sure.

Lesson learned: always have backup sabikis (now have six of various main/branch line tests.)

Yeah, spaniards are a nuisance some times. Everyone has bad days, but if you learned something you're headed in the right direction.

Same results for me today off Navarre Beach. Henderson Beach, although skunky for you today, sounds like a great spot for near shore fishing

there are free parking spots on both sides of Henderson - Back Porch to hit the complex to the West and one just about right off the Tug Louise.

Keep at it man - also try stopping for 45 sec every so often, most of my BFT have crushed it when the troll 'changes' either when going from still to moving or moving to still....

Best of luck,
Stressless

Even without catching anything worth while, it beats sitting at the house with a case of cabin fever.

Our water temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than it should be at this time of year. Hopefully, the water temperature should start rising quickly since later this week, we will be hitting the 86 F air temperature mark.

I hooked and somehow landed a 28" king on a sabiki last August. Nothing to it but luck. Hoping it warms up some by this weekend.

Good tip stressless about changing your trolling pattern to hook up with BFTs.
By the way, Henderson Park charges a $4.00 fee to enter the park.
