Default Rod breaking poons--- Gulf Shores, 8/17/11

The water has been filthy so we I haven't been much but we did go twice where we were finally skunked by the tarpon. With the sudden absence of tarpon, I kept things simple and just stuck with light spanish gear and one spinner to cast a swimbait to a tarpon IF I saw one. I didn't want to mess with live bait and sabiki rigs. Wish I did now.

We got out around 7:45AM and had a little bit of action with small spanish and hardtails. After that we paddled around for an hour with little to show for it. Met up with my friend Steve Morrow around 9:15. Steve hasn't done much yakking in the gulf and I invited him to hopefully get him hooked on it. While drifting and discussing rigging with Steve to get him in the right direction, I heard a loud suction sound and looked about 60ft to my right to see a nice tarpon rolling. Of course, I have my swimbait rod put up and out of quick, easy reach. Alan sees it too and casts a small lure at it but to no avail. He did have a live hardtail on though so he did the normal routine and tried to intercept the fish as it move down the beach. Steve rigged a swimbait as well and we worked West with the fish. After 10 minutes, Alan hooks in to a 75lb fish and after a few good jumps and 20 minutes of digging, the light wire king leader parts. I had been following Alan to take pics and even invited a father and son over to watch. They had been out in a tandem rental yak and we gave them a show. Meanwhile, I look back and see another tarpon out of the water by Steve. I hear him hooting so I know he's hooked up too. After Alan loses his, I paddle over to Steve who is needing some coaching. The fish makes some great runs and does some scary, kayak-shadowing jumps that no-doubt raise the hair on Steve's neck and make me think he is going to be killed. At one point it made a fast turn towards the rear of the yak and snaps the rod above the first guide. Now Steve has to fight with about 2 ft of rod. I come over to help Steve as he has now leadered the 90lber about 8 times and try to get close to grab the fish. The fish jumps again and straightens the hook yakside. The fish was a legal catch and although Steve doesn't have a pic of him holding it, there's no doubt the hook sank past the barb and that he'll be out there with me again for another!

Congrats to Steve on his first tarpon!

We'll be back at it tomorrow with proper gear.
